Web-design tweaks and changes

I’m playing with some code changes (reducing the size of pages, fixing bugs and errors, etc). If you notice that the web-site is completely screwed, try to Shift-Reload first. If it does not help, try again in a couple of minutes.

If it still looks wrong, please let me know.

Design changes

Those who DO NOT use Internet Explorer may have noticed some design changes. Could you please let me know what you think?

Unfortunately ~~the buggy piece of crap called~~ Internet Explorer ~~is utterly broken by design~~ does not follow standards and should ~~be banned~~ NOT be used (for your own safety). IE8 is better than IE6/7, but still only 20% on the Acid3 test.

Bugs in Firefox 3.6 and web-design

Update: Fixed for Firefox 3.6. Actually, it was not an FF bug, but following the standard. The background of the boxes will be broken in Internet Explorer which is buggy. Chrome renders OK.

Firefox 3.6 is out but the bug related to element positioning is still there. So if you are going to upgrade you will see that the design is broken.

Looks like it’s the time to rewrite the internals again… Oh my …

Upgrading WordPress

I’m upgrading WordPress to the latest version. Please let me know if anything is broken.

Do we need “post rating” and “share” buttons?

What do you think, do we need “post rating” and “share” buttons? Does anybody use social/shared/remote bookmarking? These features proved to be not that useful as I thought, but, again, is it just me who never uses them?

Redesigning the website

Update 2009-03-23 @ 12:35:25:

Moved some functions to JavaScript. That reduced the page sizes, decreased the page load times (since the menus are cached by the browser) , and increased the percentage of the content/metadata ratio.
The menus can still be accessed by JavaScript disabled clients
Added contact info
Added navigation links (on the right) to the recent comments, most viewed articles, etc
Added a Map counter (at the very bottom). It’s a fun to see where you all are coming from 😉

WordPress upgrade

Tonight the WorfdPress (the blogging software) will be upgraded. During the upgrade the access to the dynamic contents will be very limited.

Update: Upgraded! Please let me know if you notice that something is broken.

Testing new forum software

I’m sick of using phpBB. My next attempt is mybb. I have migrated all users, threads, messages, etc from the previous forum to the new one. Only attachments did not find their way to the new forum, but I will fix that manually.

Please test and let me know what you think: new forum.
