Gatekeeping - generally speaking, I hate it because I'm for includivity.

But the irony is I sometimes feel inclined for gatekeeping.
While browsing my usual avenues of interest online - leggings and onepiece swimsuits - only to be reminded of this ever present amount of guys who are not exactly helping social acceptance.

Years ago, I read this online rant in the form of an opinion piece by some entitled TheGuardian editor. The gist; basically how awful MAMIL's are - middle aged men in Lycra. Obviously, she couldnt deal with the streets being "polluted" with these disgusting pudgy old men in their all-too-revealing cycling kit.

Anyhoo - while browsing Instagram and obscure forums for men in onepiece swimsuits, it struck me once more how there's this persistent percentage of middle aged men posting tons of photo's with their unflattering physique in Lycra, beer gut, sagging manboobs and all.

I usually try to be as openminded and inclusive as possible - certainly trying ro avoid offending any particular person.
But why is it that a majority percentage of these guys seem to confirm this MAMIL stigma? Sure, there's always a few pics of fit guys in leggings as well - but I would say they always walk the safe path of playing the sports&excercise card resulting into social acceptance (and besides, they usually wear the non-shiny versions and/or baggy shorts on top).

And it doesnt seem like the "MAMIL's" actually put some effort in to change either. Year after year they just keep on posting that Lycra clad beergut, always ending up looking like some sort of middle aged sleezebag.

Sure I am nearly middle aged now as well, nearing 45, but at least I look 5-10 years younger and certainly fit enough to publicly sport Lycra.
I mean, eons ago I used to be overweight for 2 years of my life. The absolute low point was 2002, weighing 98KG at 1.75m.
So I set out to change, drastically. Result; I lost 35KG in 3 months. Ever since, my weight is always around 63 - 65 KG.

Do the entitled editors have a point about MAMILs afterall?
Are they really the cause of the social ridicule on men in Lycra?

Well, the weight gain started during college years, commuting. Taking the train back home every day, drafty cold winter evenings. Take-out Pizzahut slices and french fries helped keeping me warm, but probably the positive effect was moreso psychological. The physical effect was, well...the logical weight gain.

Then by summer 2002 I got real sick n tired of myself in the mirror and in photos. Indirect sneers from certain family members and ' friends' also made me fed up with the entire situation. How did it get to this so fast? (basically within 2 years time span). I figured I would never ever score a girlfriend this way and I felt disgusted of myself, especially in my cherished Lycra (only speedo style Lycra briefs at that time).

So, I went to a dietician, got me diet plan prescribed and a calory diary. Basically, calory intake bookkeeping. First 3 weeks, diet shakes ONLY. 800 cal per day and 6/7 days per week running on a treadmill for an hour and a half, "powered by heavy metal music" to retain the aggression. Then, transition into 2nd month with diet bars, 1000 cal per day, same excercise routine.

Thankfully I did have the time to do this before commencing a new study end of 2002. But yeah, it was a living hell of a weightloss plan. Every hour not on the treadmill, diet eating and light studies, I basically slept because being awake was hellish due to my body screaming for foods.
Everyone around me was gobsmacked at the weightloss transformation within that short amount of time. I guess it was all about pure will power.

Now, 21 years later still 64KG's, happily married and in Lycra swimsuits and leggings.

Anyway, do you think the 'mamil' types, who have become the target of public Lycra ridicule, s
inadvertedly, spoil things for Lycra lovers in general?
I mean, they could make an effort to get in shape, choose better fit combinations that dont look like a chubby rainbow.

It's a nice one. I'm doing it several times a day now, when I have time.
