I have bought a makeup set last summer and tried. Results were mixed.
I don't have many possibilities to experiment, so I went to two individual makeup lessons. It lasts 3-4 hours and you do a makeup together with an instructor.
I have been to two different instructors and each one gave be different tips and recommendations.
First lesson was funny, friendly, instructor was much more experienced in teaching and we finally run out of time. She was doing my makeup on half of my face and I was repeating after her on the other half. It was on a business trip, so I have kept my makeup on, changed in the car and went for dinner.
With second instructor atmosphere was cooler (initially she was addressing me as "Sir" (instead of "you", not "Ma'am")) and we run out of topics before scheduled time, even after trying some extra things like evening makeup and false eyelashes. I was doing makeup on my own on my face and she was just doing touchups if necessary. After thad we took some photos and I had to wipe it clean.
I shouldn't post my photos here, but a selfie I have made after the second lesson is jaw dropping. I barely can recognize myself.
I recommend anyone starting with makeup to go for such lesson or just have professional makeup done once, just to see what the final result could look like and what you can achieve on your own.
