Well, I do have quite a bit of wordtravel & longstay experience abroad, including the US. (Heck I had a greencard opportunity in 2009 with my ex in Humble, Houston TX).
Regarding that DFP, I would simply call it mild exhibitionism; There's probably some solipsism involved because you can never know for sure how onlookers perceive you, but there's simply the internal thrill of self awareness that you're wearing something very sexually charged, in public.
But by means of styling it in a modest way, no public indecency law can catch you.
And as a side effect, you can pull the fetish gear out of the fetish context, normalizing it, at very least for yourself, potentially causing a ripple effect. Spouse, family and friends acceptance is just the first step of course.
But amidst the current day societal toxicity, intolerance, I really think it's a matter of mindset that will dictate if you're able to face any intolerance consistently - because it will always be somewhere.
But I do have to admit I don't have the full picture, because I only started wearing the Lycra leggings since 2021 and I migrated from Europe to Asia in December 2018. Even though the Netherlands is comparatively more progressive and liberal, I bet the leggings would attract some backlash there.
So far zero real negative experiences here in Asia.
However, outside of a sports context, I've only seen one guy casually dressed in leggings (at the movie theatre no less) in Manila, so I do feel like a one-in-a-million kind of outlier. The stares and giggles are all part of the adventure.
