Self Bondage Shop
#1
Hi everyone,

Just a question, which there may well be a quick and easy answer to. There are tons of bondage shops online, but is there one that specialises in Self Bondage?

I've seen quite a few posts about people making their own bits and pieces, but with the exception of an Ice Lock made by Mr S Leather, I can't find anyone making Self Bondage items.

Am I not looking properly, or is it because it's dangerous, and you'd be sued if someone used it incorrectly etc?

Surely there are people out there (like me) who are not very handy or don't have a garage or workshop to make things and would love to click away merrily online and have something delivered (like that Ice lock) that will do the job...?

Appreciate any thoughts or views.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

Do not think so. Everything can be used incorrectly. Think of knives, for example. And there are disclaimers.

There are sleeping bags with double-sided sliders.

I think, that there are more problems:

o- Difficult to invent something reliable. Say, more reliable than http://www.likera.com/sb/time/ice-padlock4.php (I can't say that even this construction is 100% reliable, but ice should eventually turn into water, if it's not freezing outside).

o- Lots of standard bondage tools can be used for self-bondage

o- Who will pay for R&D?

o- How many people will buy expensive, complex, not 100% reliable equipment? Bondage clubs, specialists will be cheaper. Can't say anything about reliability, though.

o- How many interesting bondage (not selfbondage) constructions have been invented? Probably Gord is the only one who's doing something indeed original.

o- See this post: The future of (self-)bondage-fetish-wear. Will it ever exist?

Thank you both for the feedback and links.

You raise some interesting points, Like Ra - and none (in my opinion) appear insurmountable.

I'm going to look into this more as I would be quite happy to pay for R&D and develop a shop for responsible adults, with a price point that covers the cost of making the goods and does not try to recover the R&D. As you say, there will be a price threshold that people will be prepared to pay. If one is prepared to swallow the setup costs for the greater good, its then whether you can make something reliable for that amount...?

I've spent so many years secretly loving bondage and being able to do nothing about it as there was no quick, easy and safe way to experiment. There have to be other people out there who feel the same?

Hmm! I feel motivated to action. Watch this space 😊

I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

Why? What about those people selling weapons?

What else would you like to buy in such a shop?

There are is so much bondagegear, which can be used for selfbondage too.

To be honest: Why would make someone a shop? To make some profit of course...

An other fact is, the less consumer, the expensiver the goods are.
The more time someone has to spent to make a good, the expensiver the good is.(Please be lenient with my english) I hope you get the point.

In my eyes the selfbondage community is a very little part of the fetish scene, in which the bondage scene itself is only a fraction....

I disagree - it's not all about profit - not if it's a passion and you can afford to dedicate time and effort to it.

Like Ra, can you shed some light on numbers in the self bondage community, maybe from number of people in the forum or something. 100, 250 - 500?

To buy what sort of selfbondage gear?

It is. We all have to eat and live somewhere...

These figures will not tell you anything. Most are interested in pictures only. The rest ask questions like: "I have only rope. Please send me a self-bondage scenario".

I would say there are no more than a couple of dozens who practice serious self-bondage sessions and talk about it publicly. But they have their own way and will not pay for expensive gear. Neither will I. I'd better spend my money on latex. That's expensive enough.

There's always a hidden part of lurkers. Some of them are rich and can pay. We can see that in the self-bondage death statistics. Scary, but true.

However, all the above does not mean that we have to stop dreaming and stop telling others about our dreams. BTW, I'm composing a fetish/bondage story. And I have lot's of devices and suits in mind, but they are mostly bondage (not selfbondage) related. Stay tuned 😁

Speaking of money. Check this post: http://www.likera.com/blog/wp/archives/8847 I can't collect enough money to pay for one year.

Nah, unless someone's aeady got lots of money or going to make money selling the freshly designed niche gear, nobody will seriously look into it.

I haven't seen any self-bondage shops yet. I suppose, the only source for items are general bondage and sex shops. The best sources for equipment are those shops - simply "abuse" the stuff they offer, and, of course, DIY shops for those, who can weild a hammer and other tools.

I agree, the market would be pretty small, and therefore, we can't expect industrial gear at all. On the other hand, there might be one or the other shop out there, who offers good stuff, yet to be found out.

As for SB gear, I have used so far - all items bought from shops:

Rope
Hand cuffs
Leather harness
Rubber sleeping bag simple
Rubber sleeping bag, inflatable (never been able to inflate it enough with me inside, but cool)
Armbinder (that wasn't easy)
"Bolero Armbinder" (easy enough, though not to be used out of the box)
Tights (see Likeras instructions for pantyhose armbinder)
Some sort of latex straigth jacket (easy enough to escape, but still good and exhausting)
Chains and padlocks
A judo belt (more comfortable than rope, but knots can become very tight)

I didn't mention hoods, gags and the like, because they can be used for self-bondage without any problem (well, safety can be an issue, but that's another story).

I hardly ever used timing devices. I tried the ice-block-in-sock method, which works fine. I have also used the "get from a to be for release" method. But I don't trust any devices that rely on mechanics, electrical power or computers. Such devices, if any, would be special for SB and probably unaffordable, if made commercially for the tiny market. One device, I am still looking for, is a fairly silent air pump that can inflate and deflate. These are items, that would be interesting for SBers, I suppose, while most bondage garments can be used with some imagination, unless they are useless anyway (a lot of stuff offered for cheap). The leotard single glove suit shown on the blog of this website, is a good example, you only need a string and an attachment point, to operate the zipper.

But I think, that the main reason for shops not offering items for self bondage is quite simple: Self bondage is a dangerous past-time and it is impossible to guarantee the safety of a customer, even if he sticks exactly to the instructions. This could have very expensive consequences.
