No, I use soft braided nylon rope and it doesn't cause any damage to tights or Lycra/spandex.

I love all types of pantyhose but I mostly wear support pantyhose. Not so I can say I need them for medical reason because that is just not true. I wear pantyhose because I love them and how they feel.
