My GF has always expressed a desire to be in bath full of KY, but that was never going to happen due to cost - however much I wanted to fulfil her wishes! Could this stuff deliver and be cheap enough?

J-lube is a veterinary lubricant, as you say, supplied as a powder you mix with water to the desired consistency. A bottle is about £12 on ebay and will make about 30-35 litres of lube. Cheap enough for an evening's entertainment 😉
Although how you're going to get rid of eight gallons of lube is your problem...
As an aside you can use it dry on rubber as you would talc and as you sweat it transforms into lube. It's...interesting.
