After reading all of this thread several time I can honestly I've never put my self in situation that come close to this. My new tie up now includes something like suspenders and I don't even like how close they get to my neck. I started to put a cross tie in them and decided that would create something that is a loop around my upper torso and that was unacceptable. I may get caught some time because I can get out, but at least I be alive to talk about it. I've learned from this thread.

Seems he likes to dress up, tie a rock or something and toss himself into the water. Then using a knife, cuts himself free.

Eh, some self bondage tends to veer towards the how close can we get to the edge Houdini behavior (I assume for the excitement) but the high risk nature frequently ends in tears. Not that unlike other extreme sports, some skydivers forget to jump with their parachutes.
It’s a bit morbid but since we happen to be on the topic, a long while back I went down the rabbit hole of 50/50 nsfl challenge video kinds, one of the only videos I actually noticed was one where a cross dresser doing self bondage accidentally drowned on camera due to some kind of setup mistake. It was actually a turning point for my self bondage principles as I realized that noose knots, one way rope traps (the kind where a loop goes over a knot with tape on one side), zip ties, cheap electronic locks and knives and scissors for release weren’t safe enough. It’s also partly why I now mostly just add more toys rather than crafting new and exciting setups

My case wasn't about life and death, just embarrassment. That day I was in a hotel, had taken some stuff to play. For the first time I had a real handcuffs with only escape by key. Before I started, I decided to do some exercises with opening them while hands were on my back. Good for me, I wasn't naked yet. The first test was ok, I struggled a little bit and I thought what if I put them on the other side. AND THAT was it. I couldn't put the key into the hole. Aaaarghhh!!! After an hour of unsuccessful attempts, I was desperate and decided to go outside my room and ask anybody for help. And I did it. Knocked to a few rooms, but nobody was there. Finally, I found a guy a few rooms later. But he hadn't even opened the door, just asked what I want. I told him I was embarrassed asking him for this because I couldn't free myself. He laughed at me and told me to get the fuck out. At this point, I felt terribly helpless. I just walked the corridor watching other people, trying to find someone (judging by how they look) who could potentially help me. Another hour has passed, nobody seemed to be trustful. Disaster - that was the only word in my mind then. But suddenly, I recalled that I have a Swish pocketknife and a duct tape, I could stick the key with duct tape to the knife, and maybe I would be able to open the handcuffs. I went back to my room, and a few minutes later I was free. What a relief! That lesson humbled me very much and since then I have some tools in close range in case I would need a backup release.
