Self Bondage Checklist
#1
We all want to live to suffer another day. So Likera and I are starting a safety checklist here.

Self bondage accidents seem to fit into categories. If we can list all the categories, maybe we can prevent someone from being seriously hurt or killed.

The idea is, when designing, and again when setting up, go through all the items and make sure there are no dangers.
  • Power failure - what happens if the power fails?
  • internet failure
  • phone failure - what if the cell phone dies? What if the phone company equipment dies?
  • electronic failure - ANY piece of electronics can fail. Small computers fail frequently
  • Can the key become caught, tangled, or in any way not deploy?
  • What happens if you drop the key?
  • Can you still escape if bonds cut off circulation? How much dexterity does your escape method require, and are you sure you'll have it?
  • Can anything create an emergency (hot lamp? candle? fireplace? hose to washer that 'pops loose' occasionally?
  • Assume every hose will leak
  • Assume every hose will be blocked
  • Assume ever hole may be plugged
  • what fails safe (eg electromagnets release when power fails). What fails deadly?
  • Can anything block your breathing?
  • Can anything restrict your breathing enough that you get light headed and pass out?
  • If you pass out, what happens?
  • Can you fall?
  • Assume any electrical power fed into a device will go everywhere. Don't connect a box to both power mains and your body. Use a battery.
  • Can current pass through your heart? What if something is shorted? electrodes on your legs, one of them comes loose and touches the iron bed, now current is in leg, thru heart, out hands and handcuffs to bed.
  • can you choke to death on liquid introduced to your mouth?
  • can rubber garments/vac bed cover your mouth?
  • if you have something inserted in anus or vagina, can it impale you? If you fall, will it be forced into you?
  • Do you have a backup release if your primary release fails?
  • If your primary release is particularly unreliable (eg a CD tray opener, instead of an ice lock), do you have a tertiary release?
  • Can one of your releases fail and cause another to fail?
  • Are there any sharp objects around you could cut yourself with?
  • Do you really, really need to be inescapably bound, or can you leave yourself an out 'in extremis'?
  • Are you sober? You wouldn't trust your life to a machine designed or built by someone who was high or drunk. Don't trust your life to a machine you designed in same condition.
  • If you fall asleep bound, what is the consequence of that? A scuba diver was killed when he fell asleep while diving inside a wreck. People fall asleep driving all the time.
  • Can anything slip and become tighter than intended?
  • Is anything too tight? What's fun in setup might become terrifying during a long session
  • What happens if you need to vomit? People die choking on vomit all the time.
  • What happens if you need to urinate or defecate?
  • If you've put something fluid in your body, are you sure it won't damage you over the duration of the bondage? (I don't do enemas, don't know about this)
  • If you've put something solid (dildo, butt plug) into your body, are you sure you don't have an allergic reaction?
  • Do you have asthma? If so, what's your plan to use your rescue inhaler?
  • can anything restrict your throat?
  • can your clothing become a hazard?
  • do you have epilepsy? heart disease? what's your plan for dealing with medical emergency during the adventure?
  • are you wearing uncomfortable/high heeled shoes? Are you sure they won't prevent you from doing what you need to? Can you poke a hole in something with one? Can you injure yourself?
  • If your setup depends on something remaining inflated, it won't
  • Will your waterbed leak?
  • are you sure a clamp on a body part won't make the tissue die?
  • Did you test this without the 'let me out' lock? Was everything the same in the test as the real session? How long did you test?
  • If someone comes in, will it be someone who won't mistreat you? You don't want raped, or robbed, or killed.
  • Can an animal in the house disrupt your release or become a danger?
  • Never introduce gas into any orifice, including compressed air. Compressed air blown into a body cavity can cause an air embolism.
  • Can you overheat? Become dehydrated? have heat stroke? even in moderate temperature, a rubber hood and heavy gear and predicament bondage can cause you to overheat
  • Can you freeze? What if the heater goes out and you're caged overnight? being immersed can be a killer. A human body rapidly loses heat to the water. Even a warm bath will soon become a killer.
  • If your secondary release is the return of a person, you're betting your safety on them returning. If they run into friends and go see a movie....
  • If your release depends on something dropping, will it actually drop?
  • are you strong enough to do what you need, in an awkward position?
  • If your release is an electromagnet, be aware that the steel 'core' will have a residual magnetic field - it will become a permanent magnet. Make sure that effect is weak enough that your release works
  • Can you be visited by unwelcome wildlife? mosquitos might be a nuisance unbound and torture bound.
  • what about the weather?
  • can that wood splinter?
  • can something break and leave behind a sharp, dangerous part?
  • can something smother you?
  • can you end up in a position where you have to use muscles to get your mouth or nose free to breath?
  • can you choke on a gag?
  • can someone come home and not realize you're trapped in the next room? I know of a potential catastrophe because a woman tied herself up for her SO. The SO came home intoxicated, passed out in the living room, woke up late for work and ran out - while his girlfriend spent the whole next day spread eagled on the bed.
  • If you panic and try to escape, can you slip your bonds into position where you'll injure or kill yourself?
  • If you depend on a human to release you, can you depend on the human playing safe, sane, and consensual if they discover you? "you've dressed in my clothes and tied yourself up? Well, I'll just leave you like that all day!" is fun porn, but not rescue if you're actually in difficulty. Will that person be reliable if they drink? Are they likely to?
  • If you depend on a 'foul liquid' release, can it be a danger to you?
  • If you depend on a darkness release, are you sure you can see when it's light? If you're depending on a lamp on a timer, what happens if it doesn't light?
  • If you reach the key, can you find the keyhole, insert the key, and activate the lock?
  • If you are using a padlock, is there enough room for the lock to open? If it opens, can you get the hasp to disengage what it's holding?
  • ropes sometimes jam in pulleys.
  • Can you chip a tooth on a hard gag like a dental spreader?
  • are you placing pressure on joints (eg kneeling) that will cause tremendous pain or permanent disability?
  • an you be suffocated by a forced deep throat scenario?
  • can you get locked in a room or locked out of the house?
  • If the worst happens and emergency services comes, are you in for legal troubles atop the embarrassment? Basically, imagine there's a rather pissed off cop standing there - what can they see that you'd rather they didn't (illegal substances, whatever)?
  • If you take pain killers and then engage in self bondage, you might be in mid scenario when they wear off and you discover the pain's considerably worse than you thought
  • Are you in a place where calling emergency services would result in criminal prosecution (eg you're in Saudi arabia)?
  • if you use mercury switches, are you protected both from the mercury and from sharp glass if you break one?
  • rebreather - is your breath going in and out the same tube? That can kill you! You breath in, then breath out CO2 filled air , which fills the tube, and then you breath in *the same air!* after a few cycles all you have is deadly CO2.
  • can an air valve in breath play jam?
  • can your air supply move away from your mouth/nose?
  • Are you in a weather/fire/alien attack/etc zone?
  • tight collars that might press on the arteries.
  • straps across throat area that may strangle if your setup moves you
  • Test everything before you actually put yourself into self-bondage, then test it again!
  • Do not make last minute changes
  • Complicated = prone to failure! Simple really is best and safest (I am the worst to advise on this as I LOVE complicated self-bondage!)
  • Do not get carried away in the moment - this is the single biggest factor in my close calls. I'll add 'Just one more' element or make a last minute change to my plans (untested of course!) and that's when things start to go wrong. Its so obvious in hindsight, but there is something in the chemistry of my body when its aroused that throws caution to the wind and gets me into trouble.
  • casting - people have been burned when being cast -many chemical reactions, including plaster and resin, are exothermic - they get hot. is whatever you're using not going to burn you? Thicker sections get hotter.
  • If you plan as primary release or backup to cut something, a) are you sure your cutting instrument actually can cut it? b) what will hold the rope/cast/bandage/etc. still while it's cut, c) do you have space between it and your body to get the tool in? d) do you have access to both sides if using something like scissors? e) are you going to be hurt by the tool falling or being released? f) are you going to cut yourself with it?
  • Leather shrinks in contact with water. Can you end up with a piece of leather around a body part that shrinks?
  • Shapewear/hose/corset that's pleasantly confining could be really painful or cause hypertension during hours of enforced wearing. Spanx type shapewear can roll down and become a constricting band.
This list is off the top of my head and undoubtedly has some flaws. Corrections, additions, etc. are STRONGLY encouraged.
If we end up in a long discussion of some point I'll start maintaining a more coherent list so points don't get lost.

I'd like to put the list on a firmer basis.
I'll look around for any real cases of SB gone wrong. Those should all go in here.
Much SB fiction depends on 'oops it went wrong'. Some of those may be informative.

Fortunately, I only know of one case personally of a release failing, and the victim later told me about it as an amusing in retrospect story. (it's above as well, briefly).
She wasn't really into bondage, but decided to surprise her boyfriend by dressing in sexy lingerie and handcuffing herself spread eagled to the bed, knowing he'd come home soon.
Unfortunately, boyfriend was a recovering alcoholic, and chose that evening to go off the wagon. He arrived home late. They lived in a small one bedroom apartment with the bedroom on the second floor. Instead of going up to the bedroom to be confronted by his girlfriend, he fell drunk asleep on the sofa. She never heard him come in.
In the morning, he awoke, late for work and still not wanting to risk a confrontation with his girlfriend. So he took off for work without going upstairs. She only realized he was in the house when he slammed the door on the way out.
She was only released when he returned home after work.

Tinker D was caught by a fire evacuation warning for a wildfire just before snapping last lock.

Strappado used casting material on feet, and had difficulty getting the shears in to cut it off.

Let's add tight collars that might press on the arteries.

straps across throat area that may strangle if your setup moves you (the Gord wheel thing just posted might have that issue).

I should clarify 'legal troubles if emergency services comes' - thinking of drugs, etc. that could be laying out. Basically, imagine there's a rather pissed off cop standing there - what can they see that you'd rather they didn't?

An interesting list and one that, as always, underlines that solo play is very risky if you don't follow the mantra of 'safe, sane and consensual' (well, 'consensual' is a given if you're on your own, but you know what I mean!)

As I've posted before - self-bondage is inherently dangerous, but then so is crossing the road, drinking alcohol, taking drugs (if that's your thing), not exercising, exercising too much, driving a car and, and, and... you get the picture!

I enjoy the thrill of tying myself up, but I do my best to stay safe as well - I definitely don't want to die or even be discovered in an embarrassing predicament!

Have I made mistakes? - Yes!

Have I had scary moments or 'close calls'? - Yes! (read some of my session postings - my set-ups are not perfect)

Do I learn from these? - Yes! And the biggest lessons are quite simple:

1. Test everything before you actually put yourself into self-bondage, then test it again!

2. Complicated = prone to failure! Simple really is best and safest (I am the worst to advise on this as I LOVE complicated self-bondage!)

3. Do not get carried away in the moment - this is the single biggest factor in my close calls. I'll add 'Just one more' element or make a last minute change to my plans (untested of course!) and that's when things start to go wrong. Its so obvious in hindsight, but there is something in the chemistry of my body when its aroused that throws caution to the wind and gets me into trouble.

Play safe

great post. Yes, we benefit from working out best practices.

your point about last minute changes is spot on. Divers say "plan your dive and dive your plan"

Ever notice that most SB porn involves something going wrong? It's easy to assume that that's because the author needs danger to create narrative drama, but I suspect some people enjoy the danger at some level.

Re complexity - Obviously from the fiction I've posted, I'm queen of complex scenarios. But most of my scenarios have simple ways to fail safe. The 'secretary' story is pretty complicated. And the key fall is under computer control - ridiculously failure prone. It's backed up by a mechanical timer - waay too complicated to be trusted. Her backup is reasonably simple - break the door with a crowbar.

Finally, Yes, a HUGE than you to you, madjack, for posting full accounts of your adventures. Besides enhancing safety for everyone, they help normalize our particular kink. And there's safety in pride.

I think, this list is a great basis to make your own safety scheme. For a quick check before an improvised session, it is too long - and we still do improvised sessions. I think, everybody should have his own check-list, written down or in his mind, to go over before and sometimes even during a self-bondage session. For example, I am mostly using rope for restraining myself, so there will be other dangers than using shackles or straight jackets. In a perfect world, you have your "base layer", that always has the same rules, then add more stuff, either in groups (ropes for example) or individually, such as a gag, enema or electric stimulator. these additions have extra rules that should be reflected. So, tying your legs and hands with rope is one set of safety measures. If you want to add a gag, you have extra specifics, plus some thoughts about how the gag could interfere with the ropes.

So, lets keep collecting possible dangers and complications, so everybody can check his own methods.

And keep in mind, that self-bondage is dangerous anyway. One of the most important rules in partner bondage is to never leave the victim alone.
