I think we're just very aware of these unwritten rules of public perception - and sheer nylon really is crossing a line into female attire, whereas shiny Lycra leggings sort of hover as unisex in public eyes, albeit slightly pervy.
Of course there's also the less practical side of sheer - I am too lazy to shave and my hair is quite stiff so when it grows back to a short stubble it feels rough so that would snag up the sheer tights.

As I've posted before, my girlfriend has a 'thing' for my hairy legs and shaving them (even though I really would like to at least experience the feeling) is a absolute 'no-no'.
There was a brief period when I thought she might relent, but alas it came to nothing.
