OK, the first 5-string bass was Fender Bass V made in 1965 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bass_V

Interestingly, 6-string bass appeared earlier in 1956 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended-range_bass

The neck gets wider, but that's not as much of an issue with a bass because you aren't playing cords.
