I meant to post this response before you posted your spiky ball joint but I had a computer issue that required an immediate restart so I lost what I had typed in that post and had to redo it. What you made reminds me of some medical braces that have lockable or limitable joints so I was thinking it might save some effort in building this device if you could get some of those aeady existing joints to use. If not maybe some inspiration could also help. I downloaded some photos of what I mean. Using joints from these devices all over what you want to build might be useful. These also might give you some inspiration or other ideas. These joints are different than the ones above and are called hirth joints. Anyway, I hope this helps in some way. I'm super interested in what you're designing and can't wait to see how it turns out.

The way this will work is it will be part of the lower half such as below the knees while the joint (will be hollowed out with cutouts to stick into) is where your joint fits inside such as a knee joint. The ball joint will then be attached to the upper section by a rotating connector that would move on the thigh piece. This admittedly makes the previous design obsolete as it allows for greater freedom of movement and greatly reduced skin shown. The problem is that the complexity and size of the design might make it impractical for fingers and toes. This can however be a benefit if you prefer limiting hand functionality as the previous design has less freedom.

And here is v3. With a hole in the middle and radial symmetry so it actually turns well at 10 degree increments.
