Same thing for figure skating, it's becoming a tailoring competition. Style and fashion should be separated from the physical feats these young athletes can do.
If you think about it, it's unfair both ways... If a good athlete has a bad outfit, that shouldn't deduct points from his/her performance. If a good outfit ends up with an inexperienced athlete, it's bad for the tailor.
I get it's a team effort, outfit included... but come on, they are clearly distinct skills. I guess a bad outfit can stiffen the movements of an athlete, but a good outfit doesn't necessarily improve the athlete's performance.

Umm...it was fetishised? 😊
Totally not what I meant.
Just image google; womens tennis oufits - serena williams - venus williams.
You will find a vast array of results which highly differ in style, but they all share one common trait! which is to defy the traditional womens tennis outfit regulations in the most flagrant manner.

I would say it's also a mindset thing.
Any athlete feeling less than comfortable/confident in a particular outfit will have an instant mindset disadvantage, even if said outfit does not inhibit max potential performance in a tactile way.

given this thread, you guys are really wondering why some gymnasts might feel more comfortable wearing less revealing attire? Of course you can never rule out that any kind of outfit triggers some peculiar interest group. If I consider the online forum of my regular newspaper, the reactions are not so different. At least there's a few like-minded guys noting that the catsuit-like alternative might catch some unwanted attention as well, lol. Let's keep flying under the radar, ok?
Finally, I'm wondering what Verona van de Leur might say about that. (shouldn't you know her @ Like Ra? she's a former Dutch world class athlete, went adult entertainment and embraces nylon/lycra quite obviously 😁 )

She decided to work as a webcam girl and then started her own adult website, which includes adult films. She only worked with her boyfriend and quit as an adult performer in November 2019.

Yep, ANYTHING can bring some unwanted attention (and put off others) 😁 E.g. school uniform, office uniform, police uniform, medical uniform, French-maid... OK... you got the point 😁
Personally, I would prefer to see them wearing overly tight leotards/swimsuits without underwear, but with pantyhose. Think or aerobics of the 80's-90's. Latex catsuits are also OK 😋
