The expedition I read about was a joint Russian/USA one. The Russians took special anti-leech leggings, the Americans improvised with Leggs when they got there. Not sure if you can read anything into the fabled American anti-intellectualism/distrust of experts into that or not...

While mentioning noxious beasties (leeches, I mean) full enclosure in sheer tights is are used on Australian beached as a precaution against box jellyfish stings.
