How to position knots out of reach - rope selfbondage - Strappado - 02 Jun 2026

I found a fairly simple method to position overhand knots. I wanted to find one for my usual wrist tie, crossed wrists behind the back, but the knot above the wrists, away from my hands - for a much harder escape (if at all without scissors).

The idea is this: You tie a lose overhand knot and pull one strand towards the required knot position. The crossing of both strands should move along. While holding the first strand tight, tie the second knot. This won't work well with low friction rope because the method relies on the first knot remaining where you want it. And I think, the rope should be fairly soft as well - for a tighter knot.

For self bondage, you can use a door handle. The first strand goes over the handle and back. Let's say, you want to tie your wrists together. Wrap the rope aorund both wrists a few times, then around the wraps between your wrists. Pull both ends to cinch the wraps together. In this example you want the knot between your arms - away from your hands. Now tie an overhand knot where you can easily reach it, then hang one open strand over the door handle and then pull it down. The knot will go up - best try this in front first, so you get the idea (and can chew through the knot later on in case you can actually not undo it with your hands). Then carefully tie a second knot and pull the other strand slowly while holding the first strand tight. The second knot will go where the first knot is. When it is close enough, yank hard on both ends to finish.

I tried this today and it works well. But there is some slack in the last loop that is secured by the knot. I think, this will get better with practise.

If you have any questions, let me know. I also might be able to take some pictures, but not tonight.
