Now to improve my arduino coding skills.
It could be a potentiometer, but if I was coding something that needed to count up and down like that, I would use a rotary encoder, not a potentiometer.

I would love to see this built, so I will try to help you as much as possible if you want to attempt this. Anyway, if you donate to the dude's patreon, he will give you the supply list and arduino code for the tugger (assuming I read it correctly)
