Thanks all, in the end I used Recuva which has managed to recover most files. Albeit without my directory structure fully intact!!! ouch. Anyway, one things I'm concerned about is putting things bag on retroshare that may be corrupted so my next step is to find a tool to test the integrity of any files I have recovered
You need another drive big enough to hold the recovered files.

For FAT and NTFS I recommend GetDataBack. It's paid, but it works very well and the GUI is easy to use.
