Maybe a little off topic, but when did five string basses become a thing?

Some years ago, out of the need to expand the range for lower tones. Drop-tuning isn't very common at the bass, and it's not very handy because of the lack of string tension. For guitars it's something different.
I for myself now have additionally a 7-string guitar for the same reasons, and besides my 4-string bass I'm looking there for a 5-string as well.
There are 5,6,7-string basses (most 8-string bases have double strings, so they are effectively 4-string basses). They exist for decades. They are more convenient as you do not have to move your hand up&down the fretboard (left & right, actually 😁 ). On the down side, 6 string bass fret board is quite wide.
And there are guitars with more strings (still basses or guitars, not Chapman sticks). Think of the tapping style.
