In the Middle Ages, pillories were used for real punishment and humiliation. It wasn't a BDSM game like today's, and people were sometimes trapped outside in all weathers, with some condemned men freezing to death.
A tip if you're making one, as the size of the wrists and hands quickly becomes a problem.
The convicts‘’‘’ escape or the holes for the hands are too small. The trick is to make the holes big enough for everyone BUT to add bondage bracelets when the person is in the pillory. That way, they can't remove their hands.
Self-bondage TIP. Simply lock one hand with a pair of handcuffs + a self-release device.
