Typing a name in a specific section is a second required action after the login. If there's nobody in the chat, that's a useless effort, and I think many people won't do that again after that.
In Discord I don't need a second action, and usually I find several people connected.
The IRC format is less friendly IMO, but if you like it that's ok, I'm not trying to convince you, I'm just explaining why a prefer Discord for chat.
