Exactly this. Not much force needed. Just some pressure in particular areas and 10 seconds. Those who practised, for example, judo, know that perfectly well.

Yeah, that should be safer. As long as there is no pressure to the front or to the sides of the neck. However, please think of falling - what might happen.
