Too often either the linked images disappear, or the hot linking breaks. Also big images take time and traffic if viewed from mobile devices.

Make things that will please you. You'll be more motivated. And know your limits of work and of skill. Plan your work so you can do everything needed to complete it, or get those resources somewhere.
